HB 457: Protecting Personal Information Collected by State Agencies

From voter registration information to annual tax filings, information collected by state agencies is often highly sensitive. With this in mind, it is a reasonable expectation that the agencies collecting Utahns’ private information are also equipped to protect it. 

H.B. 457, sponsored by Rep. Clare Collard, seeks to ensure that the information state agencies collect is protected using reasonable data collection and use practices. The bill also gives the Attorney General authority to hold state agencies accountable when data protection practices are inadequate and halt practices that pose a threat to the security of citizens’ private information. 

Unlike S.B. 227, which adds to the patchwork of state data privacy laws regulating the activity of out-of-state private companies, this bill focuses on the data handled by state agencies. As a bill aimed at protecting consumer data, this bill is a positive step forward for the privacy and security of Utahns’ private information.
