Tech and Innovation Policy Analyst – KAP

The Libertas Institute is seeking a motivated person to expand its technology and innovation research portfolio and increase its impact in Utah and across the country.

This position is full-time and remote with occasional travel.

Responsibilities:

  • Expanding Libertas’s technology and innovation policy research in the following areas: Artificial Intelligence, State and Local Government Cybersecurity Resilience, Broadband and Government Owned Networks, platform regulation, and the Future of Work
  • Conducting in-depth research to produce policy briefs, legislative summaries, and writing to be submitted to academic publications
  • Following and compiling outside research for use in op-eds, videos, one-pagers, press releases, and interviews that inform and persuade
  • Supporting outreach efforts to communicate Libertas’s policy portfolio to other groups and partners
  • Attending stakeholder conferences and events around the country.

You will bring to the role your:

  • Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in tech and innovation policy research (or related work in the policy space, such as practicing/studying law, working in a legislative or regulatory office, or working at another think tank). Direct tech and innovation policy experience preferred. Internships count as experience
  • Policy savvy and an ability to navigate diverse, nuanced ideologies. Libertas engages with individuals who hold a wide variety of beliefs
  • Excellent oral and written skills

What Success Looks Like in this Role:

90 days:

  • Become familiar with our tech and innovation policy portfolio
  • Publish articles regularly on our site
  • Integrate with your fellow policy team members, government affairs team members, and the members of the communications and development teams

6 months:

  • Begin offering policy solutions that can be advocated in Utah (and eventually around the country)
  • Develop and plan out a research project that will lead to a policy brief or article published in an academic journal
  • Identify one or two niche policy areas related to tech policy that you can be known for

1 Year:

  • Make progress on one or two niche policy areas related to tech policy as previously identified 
  • Publish a policy brief or an article in an academic journal
  • Advise our government affairs team on tech and innovation policy matters and key Libertas reforms in Utah

About the Role

Our team is changing hearts, minds, and laws through our acclaimed Tuttle Twins educational material, our inspiring Childrens Entrepreneur Market events, and innovative policy reforms being adopted by dozens of states around the country. Were looking for somebody who is passionate about the ideas of a free society to serve as a Major Gift Officer.

This is a full-time, remote position. The Major Gifts Officer will report to our Executive Vice President.

You will be responsible for:

The Major Gifts Officer will complete all relevant tasks and strategies to make our fundraising goals a success, including:

  • Prospecting and securing meetings with qualified high-net-worth individuals for our president, Connor Boyack
  • Personal professional development
  • Making and securing initial $5k-$50k asks
  • Traveling as necessary; developing compelling collateral, reports, and materials
  • Launching new sales/fundraising initiatives to attract attention and nurture relationships with major donor 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 5-8+ years of experience in sales, major gifts, donor research, or fundraising
  • Sales background is strongly preferred but not required
  • Ability to travel as needed to donor meetings and conferences, approximately 10%
  • Warm personality and demonstrated ability to quickly build new relationships
  • Strategic thinking and ability to design and execute plans with KPIs and processes for accountability and high-performance
  • High level of organization, attention to detail, and the proven ability to prioritize and execute multiple active projects with success and accuracy
  • CRM experience; Hubspot preferred
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • An entrepreneurial, collaborative mindset
  • High levels of persistence, tenacity, and proactivity
  • Fearlessness to regularly pick up the phone and cultivate interest of prospective donors

Expectations:

The following outlines the anticipated responsibilities for the Major Gifts Officer during their initial year of employment.

90 days:

  • Establish a comprehensive understanding of Libertas Institute’s mission, vision, projects, and impact, with a specific focus on the Tuttle Twins educational material and Childrens Entrepreneur Market initiatives
  • Work closely with the president to co-develop a plan to secure $10M in 2024 that includes targeted outreach to high-net-worth (HNW) individuals, setting specific benchmarks for donor engagement and funds raised
  • Initiate contact with at least 30% of identified HNW prospects, aiming to secure meetings or commitments

6 months:

  • Create $2M in deal flow of likely gifts for 2024
  • Develop a plan with the president to secure a new $1M donor in 2024
  • Have a clear pipeline for continued engagement and follow-up with HNW portfolio
  • Establish a robust donor stewardship program that ensures ongoing engagement and satisfaction of current donors, including regular updates on the impact of their contributions

1 year:

  • Meet or exceed the $10 million organizational fundraising goal as a team.
  • Solidify Libertas Institute’s relationships with key donors and partners, ensuring their continued support and engagement with the mission and projects
  • Expand the Libertas Institute’s visibility and reputation among potential donors and in the broader philanthropic community, leveraging the success of fundraising achievements
  • Double the number of billionaire prospects/donors
  • Forge at least five new strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations, businesses, or influencers that can amplify fundraising efforts and expand the reach of Libertas Institute’s projects

Privacy Policy Analyst

The Libertas Institute is seeking a motivated person to expand its privacy research portfolio to increase its impact in Utah and across the country.

This position is full-time in-office in Lehi, Utah (work in office 2-3 days a week minimum), though we are open to considering remote candidates.

You will be responsible for:

  • Expanding Libertas’s privacy policy research in the following areas: Fourth Amendment protections, dismantling the Third Party Doctrine, government use of biometric data, government use of surveillance technology
  • Conducting in-depth research to produce policy briefs, legislative summaries, and writing to be submitted to academic publications
  • Following and compiling outside research for use in op-eds, videos, one-pagers, press releases, and interviews that inform and persuade
  • Supporting outreach efforts to communicate Libertas’s policy portfolio to other groups and partners
  • Directing the efforts of our Privacy Scholar Network and organizing periodic events to showcase the scholars

You will bring to the role your:

  • Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in privacy policy research (or related work, such as practicing/studying law in the privacy space). Internships count as experience

  • Publish in an academic journal
  • Help our government affairs team pass several privacy reforms in Utah

Criminal Justice Policy Analyst

Libertas Institute is seeking a motivated person to oversee its criminal justice research portfolio to increase its impact in Utah and across the country.

This position is full-time in-office in Lehi, Utah (work in office 2 days a week minimum).

You will be responsible for:

  • Focusing Libertas’s criminal justice policy research on over-criminalization and its effects: decriminalizing mental illness, expungement, sentencing reform/reduction, reintroduction into society
  • Conducting in-depth research and data studies to produce policy briefs, legislative summaries, and writing to be submitted to academic publications.
  • Following and compiling outside research for use in op-eds, videos, one-pagers, press releases, and interviews that inform and persuade.
  • Supporting outreach efforts to communicate Libertas’s policy portfolio to other groups and partners.
  • Collaborating with partners, stakeholders, and legislators to bring policy reform proposals to the Utah Legislature

You will bring to the role your:

  • Masters of Criminology or related degree preferred, but not required
  • Minimum 1–2 years experience in policy research (or related work, such as working for a prosecutor’s or public defender’s office). Internships count as experience.

Strategic Partner Manager

Libertas Institute is on the lookout for a driven, sales-oriented individual to manage our midrange donors and secure more funding for our programs. The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years of experience in fundraising or sales with a demonstrated success in sponsorship acquisition and relationship management. This is a full-time, virtual role. 

Responsibilities:

  • Identifying past donors for new potential donations
  • Engaging in cold calling and emailing to build new relationships and secure donations
  • Implementing effective sales strategies to meet and exceed targets
  • Managing and updating Hubspot CRM with all relevant data and communications with prospects and donors
  • Providing regular updates to leadership on progress and pipeline 
  • Assisting other members of the team making phone calls around the country

Requirements:

  • 2-3 years of experience in fundraising or sales with demonstrated success in cold calling
  • Exceptional phone skills and the ability to communicate persuasively and personably
  • A proven track record in sales, with an ability to handle rejection and persist in pursuit of goals
  • A passion for current projects at Libertas
  • A clear record demonstrating your persistence/proactivity and use of systems or processes to appropriately follow up and follow through
  • A warm personality and desire to genuinely connect with and serve our sponsors
  • Flexible/adaptable/efficient
  • Experience using Hubspot and/or LinkedIn Sales Navigator is a plus

  • Become familiar with Wealth Engine and Hubspot to qualify each contact
  • Review and familiarize with Talk Tracks
  • Work with Optimize Consulting to become familiar with tools and resources

6 months:

  • Regularly collect $2,000 in donations a week
  • Have made many failed asks and learned from each one

1 Year:

  • Raise $100,000
